After a successful educational seminar for the Court of Master Sommeliers in San Francisco, the wineries of All About Greek Wine went on the road to New York City where they captured the complete attention of the New York food and wine market with two landmark events. The first was a special seminar on Greek food and wine that took place at the prestigious De Gustibus cooking school on December 4th. In a celebrative holiday atmosphere, Arlene Sailhac, welcomed All About Greek Wine and acclaimed Chef, Pano Karatassos of Kyma in Atlanta, to host a fabulous tasting of the best food and wines of Greece.
Chef Pano delighted the guests at the jam-packed event with a demonstration of his culinary creations that feature a progressive twist on some traditional Greek dishes, paired with the finest estate wines of Greece. Well-known wine educator, Steven Olson along with Tara Thomas, Senior Editor of Wine & Spirits Magazine and Sofia Perpera, Director of All About Greek Wine, conducted the wine seminar. Amongst those in the audience were such notables as Kim Marcus, Managing Editor of Wine Spectator and Michael Weiss, Director of Wine at the Culinary Institute of America in New York.
The year ended with a sensational event on December 7th at Le Bernardin, the world-renowned restaurant of Chef Eric Ripert. Chef Pano joined his former mentor, Chef Eric, as they paired their unique culinary creations with the best wines of Greece. The event began with a short reception and wine tasting and continued with a seated 4-course meal that dazzled many of the best-known trade people in the food, wine and travel industries. Representatives from Gourmet, Food & Wine, Wine Spectator, Food Arts, Conde Nast Traveler, Saveur, Sante, New York Magazine, Wine Enthusiast, Beverage Media, Forbes and Family Circle joined many other well known journalists and consultants to celebrate the emergence of the next great winemaking region of the world--Greece. The event also attracted some of the top wine directors of New York’s restaurant scene, including Roger Dragon of Chanterelle, Andre Compeyre of Alain Ducasse, Paul Grieco of Hearth, Beth Von Benz, formerly of Judson Grill, Scott Mayger of WD50 as well as Master of Wine, Mary Ewing Mulligan and Herve Pennequin, who recently finished third in the world at the International Sommelier Competition.
All About Greek Wine, founded by Sofia Perpera, is a pioneer wine initiative of the 23 top wineries of Greece that have joined forces to introduce the modern face of Greek wine to the American public. "Although the organization was created only a year ago, the accomplishments of All About Greek Wine have been astounding," said Ms. Perpera, a Bordeaux trained Oenologist and former Director of the Greek Wine Federation, "Greece is producing world-class wines from indigenous grapes that are very food friendly and offer a greatly needed alternative to the surplus of wines being produced from the standard grape varieties around the world. It’s exciting to see the American wine industry embrace what we have come to know as The Greek Wine Renaissance."
