Following in the footsteps of their successful campaign to present the modern face of Greek wine to the American market, the members of All About Greek Wine, a group of the premier wineries of Greece, went on the road to Toronto to present their wines to a group from the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) as well as several members of the Canadian media and wine trade.
On Tuesday, March 29th, Tony Aspler, noted wine expert and author, together with Sofia Perpera, Director of All About Greek Wine, presented the top wines of Greece in an educational seminar followed by a walk-around tasting of several more of the member’s wines. The seminar and tasting covered all of the most important winemaking regions of Greece and featured the unique indigenous grapes of Greece and some distinctive international varieties from one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world. "In recent years the Greek wine sector has undergone a complete transformation which has provided the foundation for what many are calling "The Greek Wine Renaissance," Ms. Perpera remarked.
Yannis Agnostakis, GM of the Intercontinental Hotel, Toronto provided a fabulous setting for this historic event for Greek wine that drew rave reviews from the overflowing crowd. Amongst those in the audience were Mr George Soleas, VP of the LCBO, several buyers from the LCBO for the General Listing, Vintages and the European Wines as well as many LCBO consultants and employees. Also attending were representatives from The Toronto Star, The Montreal Gazette, Wine Access, Tidings, Vintage Assessments, Canadian Living, Elite Wine Food & Travel, Homemakers and the President and Vice President of the Canadian Wine Writer’s Circle. The director and several members of the Association of Canadian Sommeliers along with many free-lance journalists, wine educators and restaurateurs were also there to sample wines from the latest of the "up-and-coming wine producing regions of the world, Greece". The event was also covered by the local Canadian Omnivision TV affiliate.
Representatives on hand from the Greek government included the Consul General of Greece, Mr. Evthimios Evthimiades and the Commercial Attaché, Mr. Christos Athanassopoulos. Visiting from Greece were member winemakers, Mary Triantafillou of Emery Winery, Dr. Apostolos Spiropoulos of Domaine Spiropoulos, Yiannis Tselepos of Domaine Tselepos, George Palivos of Palivou Estate and Oenologists Tassos Drossiadis of Oenoforos Winery, Thrassivoulos Giantzidis of Domaine Gerovassiliou as well as export manager, Noel Galias of Domaine Skouras.
Winemaker, Triantafillou was amazed at the response, "It was a unique experience! The audience was unbelievably receptive and showed an extremely high level of knowledge. They were captivated by our native varieties and could not wait to find out when we would return for an encore." Yiannis Tselepos also remarked that, "For the development of Greek wine in Canada, it is essential to repeat these presentations often and in all of the major Canadian wine markets. Because of the LCBO, the Ontario market is very well organized and I believe that the results of our efforts here will be seen quickly. We realize that this is a continual process and we are here for the long term".
