Ktima Kir-Yianni means "Sir John’s estate" in modern Greek. The Ktima was named after the founder of the Boutari Company around the time of its centennial. His grandson and namesake, the winemaker Yiannis Boutaris, had planted there 35ha of Xinomavro -a local red grape variety- in the late 1960’s. It was an enormous and pioneering investment at the time, which signaled the birth of a new era in the world of Greek wine.

The creation of an estate vineyard by the leading family of negociants spearheaded the revival of the prized Naoussa Appellation. Moreover, it paved the way for a whole new generation of winemakers, who have since then brought about the renaissance of Greek wine with their top-notch estate wineries.

By the 1990’s Yiannis Boutaris had completed the construction of a new winery within the estate and had planted an additional 5he of Merlot and Syrah. As the estate came of age, a new company was formed to market its wines independently from the Boutari Group. Today, a popular blend of Xinomavro and Merlot is the estate’s flagship, while a classic Naoussa AOC and several other wines of limited production complement the estate’s portfolio.

The wedding of an ancient local variety with a noble international variety arose, not only from the demands of modern markets, but also by the spirit of progress that distinguishes Yiannis Boutaris winemaking. The hallmark of Ktima Kir-Yianni is a constant blending combination of tradition and innovation. Yiannis Boutari’s older son, Stelios, is an INSEAD graduate in charge of management and sales. His younger son, Mihalis, is a UC Davis graduate directing the vineyard and winery operations.

Kir-Yianni was founded in 1997 as a premium spin-off of the Boutari Group, the leading wine and beer producer of Greece. The first vintage dates back to 1990, while the 1995 vintage was the first one for the estate wines under the Kir-Yianni brand name.

Based on two 30-year-old estates in Northwestern Greece, the winery has an annual production of 500,000 bottles of dry white and red wines. More than half the labels are single vineyard growths from the total private acreage of 50 hectares planted with indigenous and international varieties on the eastern and western slopes of Mt. Vermio.

While Kir-Yianni is better known for its rare Xinomavro, an indigenous Greek variety, it has also been internationally acclaimed as a top producer of Syrah, as well as of Sauvignon Blanc and its blend with Roditis, another indigenous Greek grape. Kir-Yianni Estates are open to visitors for guided tours and tastings by appointment only.
